Supreme Court Ordered Mediation Panel To Solve Ayodhya Dispute Within 8 Weeks

The Supreme Court has constituted a three member panel in the decades-old  Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute.The panel chairman will be the Supreme Court retired Justice F. M. I. Kalifulla while spiritual Guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Senior Advocate Sriram Panchu shall be the other members. The three mediators of the Ayodhya dispute are from Tamil Nadu.

The five-member constitutional bench, led by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said that within eight weeks, the panel would interact with all the parties and try to solve the permanent solution of the matter.
The process of mediation to be initiated in a week. The progress report to be submitted in 4 weeks and the mediation process will be in Faizabad. Panel can take legal support in case of a problem.

The court directed the process of mediation in the closed room saying that confidentiality should be maintained so as to ensure its success.The panel may choose other members. The court said there is no legal difficulty in the making of the mediation panel.

Background of the panel members

Justice F M Kalifullah

The panel constituted for Mediation will be chaired by the Supreme Court former Justice F M Kalifullah. The full name of the Tamil Nadu Justice Kalifulla is  Fakkir Mohamed Ibrahim Kalifullah. In his long judicial journey, he set the way for a advocate-to-high Court judge, High Court Chief Justice or Supreme Court judge. Kalifullah, who started the advocacy on August 20, 1975, was appointed Permanent Judge in the Madras High Court in 2000. In February 2011, he became judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court and was appointed Acting Chief Justice two weeks later. In September 2012, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. After that, he became a Supreme Court Justice. Retired from the Supreme Court on July 22, 2016.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (Founder Of Art Of Living Foundation) 

The mediators panel includes the renowned spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is a founder of Art of Living Foundation, has already taken up the initiative to resolve the Ayodhya issue at a personal level but did not succeed. Besides, he has also taken initiative for peace in Kashmir. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has millions of followers abroad. He founded the Art of Living in 1981. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is also known for social and communal harmony programs. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar was born on 13 May 1956 in Tamil Nadu.

Sriram Panchu (Senior Advocate) 

Sriram Panchu is also included in the Mediation Panel. Senior advocate, Panchu, who has been advocating for 40 years, has been playing an active mediator for the past 20 years. Panchu is considered to be the leader(master) in settle or dispose off the controversial issues in India through arbitration.

In the Madras High Court in 2005, he started India's first court-supported mediation center. Arbitrators appointed by the Supreme Court and High Court have also trained them. Panchu has mediated many major and complex disputes related to business, corporate and other areas in all parts of the country. He is also a member of the International Commercial Mediator panel. He also wrote the book 'Mediation: Practice and Law'. On the big stage of the country and abroad, they are called to speak on mediation.
